As of Year End 2020, there are 122 CRNA schools in the United States and 2.4 CRNA schools in each State on average.  To compare, there are 13 CRNA schools in Pennsylvania and 9 CRNA schools in Florida.  In addition, North Carolina and Tennessee both have 6 CRNA schools.  On the other hand, there are no CRNA programs at all in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, New Mexico, Vermont, New Hampshire, Alaska, and Hawaii.  Oftentimes, the States with more CRNA schools tend to have more CRNA jobs as well.  This generalization applies to CRNA Schools in Arkansas as the State ranks #26 in most number of CRNA jobs in the US, which is only an average ranking.  This is one rank above Oklahoma, which is ranked #27.

NKU CRNA offers two CRNA programs.  The first is a BSN to DNP program while the second is a post-masters CRNA program which is entirely online with no campus attendance required.  Likewise, Murray State CRNA also offers a blended distance learning format where 100% of the first year program is conducted online.  The second- and third-year formats are online for the core subjects and specialty courses in person.  This provides the opportunity for students to work part-time in other jobs to earn income to pay for their tuition.  In addition, the tuition rate at Murray State CRNA is very competitive as all students pay in-state tuition rate.

Old Dominion University CRNA School in VA

Meanwhile, Old Dominion University CRNA is a boutique program not as well known, especially outside VA.  Although the class size last year was 15 students, the graduating class size in 2018 was only 8 students.  With that in mind, nevertheless, the Old Dominion graduate employment has consistently been 100% in the past decade and acceptance rates are at 50%.  Therefore, this may be an excellent choice of school for those who may be concerned about being accepted into a CRNA school.

New York, known as the Empire State, is ranked #13 in total number of CRNA Schools in the United States.  It shares the #13 ranking with Wisconsin and Puerto Rico.  With NY having more 4-year bachelor’s degree granting institutions in the United than any other State, it is actually surprising that there are so few CRNA programs in NY.  In addition, only one program is in the city (Columbia) while the others are 3-6 hours driving time away.  In fact, Columbia is the only CRNA program located in Manhattan, NYC and is considered part of the 8 universities in the Ivy League.  The Buffalo CRNA Program is part of the SUNY (State University of NY) system which includes 4 universities and more than 60 community & technical colleges.  In total, there are 3 CRNA Schools in New York as shown below.

CRNA Programs in Michigan Acceptance Rate

The average acceptance rate for CRNA programs in Michigan is 22%.  This is significantly lower compared to the national CRNA average acceptance rate of 26%.  In general, the easiest CRNA schools to get into by State are generally in the States with more CRNA schools.  For example, the average acceptance rate for CRNA schools in Florida is 30% with 9 CRNA Schools.  This compares with an acceptance rate of 13% for CRNA schools in Georgia and 24% in South Carolina, which only have 2 CRNA schools.  In the case of Michigan, this generalization does not apply.

Michigan State University CRNA, with an acceptance rate of 33% is the easiest CRNA school to get into in the State.  Detroit Mercy CRNA and Oakland University CRNA Program are the most difficult CRNA programs in Michigan to get accepted with acceptance rates of 13% and 16% respectively.  Lastly, all the nurse anesthetist schools in Michigan are Doctorate degrees, so it is no longer possible to receive a Master of Science in Nursing in the State.  However, if you already have a master’s degree, you are still allowed to practice the field of nurse anesthesia in Michigan.

In summary, although Michigan is notorious for cold and long winters, the State is incredibly attractive for prospective CRNA students and job hunters.  There is a wide selection of CRNA schools in Michigan, whether you are interested in city life in Detroit or being farther away.  Very few states can provide the number of schools and job opportunities as Michigan.  It is common that CRNA students are generally able to find nurse anesthetist jobs within the same State easier than students from out of State.  With that in mind, I highly recommend Michigan for prospective CRNA students.
