Kentucky, known as the Blue Grass State, is ranked #16 in total number of CRNA Schools in the United States.  It shares the #16 CRNA School ranking with Maryland, Massachusetts, South Carolina, New Jersey as well as several other States.  When CRNA students describe studying in Kentucky, they describe it as very rustic and beautiful agrarian countryside.  Most of the students in CRNA schools in Kentucky were already residents in the State and had intended to continue working in the State after graduation.  Others were drawn to the unique programs which we will discuss below.

Kentucky is included in the RN Compact States agreement that means RN nurses in Kentucky are able to move around freely and work within all 33 approved multi-license states.  However, it’s important to note that there is no such APRN Compact for nurse anesthetists yet though this may change in the future.  This is something that is important when people consider CRNA Schools in KY.

CRNA Programs in Kentucky

NKU CRNA offers two CRNA programs.  The first is a BSN to DNP program while the second is a post-masters CRNA program which is entirely online with no campus attendance required.  Likewise, Murray State CRNA also offers a blended distance learning format where 100% of the first year program is conducted online.  The second- and third-year formats are online for the core subjects and specialty courses in person.  This provides the opportunity for students to work part-time in other jobs to earn income to pay for their tuition.  In addition, the tuition rate at Murray State CRNA is very competitive as all students pay in-state tuition rate.

As of Year End 2020, there are 122 CRNA schools in the United States and 2.4 CRNA schools in each State on average.  To compare, there are 13 CRNA schools in Pennsylvania and 9 CRNA schools in Florida.  In addition, North Carolina and Tennessee both have 6 CRNA schools.  On the other hand, there are no CRNA programs at all in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, New Mexico, Vermont, New Hampshire, Alaska, and Hawaii.  Oftentimes, the States with more CRNA schools tend to have more CRNA jobs as well.  Unfortunately, BLS does not publicize the number of CRNA jobs in Kentucky.

Nurse Anesthetist Programs in Kentucky Conclusion

In summary, CRNA Schools in Kentucky offer the very interesting flexible option of online distance learning.  NKU CRNA offers this option only for existing master’s prepared CRNAs wanting to get their DNP while Murray State CRNA offers this option for the entire first year for all its CRNA students.  Although the small suburban towns that the CRNA programs in KY are located in may not be very compelling, the schools are a good choice for in-State residents as well as those wishing to remain in Kentucky after graduation.  This is because it is common that a SRNA nurse can find nurse anesthetist jobs within the same State easier than students from out of State upon finishing school.

CRNA Schools in Louisiana

Louisiana, known as the Pelican State, is ranked #16 in total number of CRNA Schools in the United States.  It shares the #16 CRNA School ranking with Maryland, Massachusetts, Arizona, New Jersey as well as several other States.  Baton Rouge, the capital, was previously one of the top places for young adults back in 2010 but is today one of the most dangerous places to live along with New Orleans, according to U.S. News.  However, Louisiana residents appreciate the historical multicultural influences in the music, food, and architecture in this Southern State.  Culturally, CRNA students in Louisiana also love how they are able to participate in the state’s popular traditions including Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest.

Louisiana is included in the RN Compact States agreement that means RN nurses in Louisiana are able to move around freely and work within all 33 approved multi-license states.  However, it’s important to note that there is no such APRN Compact for nurse anesthetists yet though this may change in the future.  This is something that is important when people consider CRNA Schools in Louisiana.

Nurse Anesthetist Programs in Louisiana

There are two CRNA Schools in Louisiana located in the cities of Baton Rouge and New Orleans as shown below:

  1. FranU CRNA, Baton Rouge (Doctor of Nursing Practice)
  2. LSU CRNA Program, New Orleans (Doctor of Nursing Practice)

Both CRNA programs in LA offer DNP degrees.  There are no nurse anesthetist schools in Louisiana that offer MSN master’s degrees.  FranU, formally known as Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University, was established in 2005 and is considered a boutique private Catholic university.  LSU, on the other hand, is a huge university with over 25,000 students.  LSU is the nickname for the Louisiana State University.

Applicants for both schools are required to have a current RN license with any State.  However, upon acceptance into either program, they must obtain a Louisiana registered nurse license prior to the start of classes.

This generalization definitely applies to nurse anesthetist programs in Louisiana because the State ranks #16 in the greatest number of CRNA jobs and #16 in the number of CRNA schools as well.

NFLP at CRNA Schools in Louisiana

In addition, for CRNA Schools in Alabama, LSU CRNA Program, is part of the NFLP (Nurse Faculty Loan Program).  The NFLP is a federal program created by the US government to help encourage CRNA students to pursue a career in nursing education following graduation.  The way the program works is students can take up to a US$35,000 loan per year they are in school studying to become a CRNA.  Upon graduation, up to 85% of the total student loan will be cancelled over a 4-year period while the borrower serves as a full-time nursing faculty at a nursing school.  LSU CRNA Program has been very active in the Nurse Faculty Loan Program, so if you need financial assistance for your degree, please read more about it here.

Nurse Anesthetist Schools in LA Conclusion

In summary, there are two CRNA Schools in Louisiana, which are FranU CRNA and LSU CRNA Program.  Both schools have a good reputation in the nurse anesthesia community, but the biggest concern from students studying at nurse anesthetist programs in LA is the safety of the surrounding cities of New Orleans and Baton Rouge.  Other than that, both these two CRNA schools in Louisiana are especially attractive options for those interested in living in Louisiana or those interested in working in the State after graduation.   This is because the job market for CRNAs is strong in LA.

CRNA Schools in Maryland

Maryland, known as the Old Line State, is ranked #16 in total number of CRNA Schools in the United States.  It shares the #16 CRNA School ranking with Louisiana, Massachusetts, South Carolina, Virginia as well as several other States.  Located in the Mid-Atlantic area, Maryland is strategically between Washington DC, Delaware, and Pennsylvania.  CRNA students sometimes call Maryland, ‘Miniature America’ due to its vast landscape even though it is a small state – the west is covered in mountains, the east with farms, beaches in the south and cities in the center.  CRNA Schools in Maryland are located in the center in the cities of Bethesda and College Park.  In fact, they are more or less equally the same distance away from Baltimore and Washington DC.

Maryland is part of the RN Compact States agreement, which means RN nurses are able to move around freely and work within all 33 approved multi-license states.  However, it’s important to note that there is no such APRN Compact for nurse anesthetists yet though this may change in the future.  This is something that is important when people consider CRNA Schools in MD.

Nurse Anesthetist Programs in Maryland

There are two CRNA Schools in Maryland as shown below:

  1. University of Maryland CRNA, College Park (Doctor of Nursing Practice)
  2. Military CRNA, Bethesda (Doctor of Nursing Practice)

Both the University of Maryland and the Uniformed Services University Military CRNA offer Doctorate degrees in Nurse Anesthesia.  There are no Masters of Nursing Degrees issued by CRNA Programs in MD.  In addition, it is important to note that the University of Maryland, College Park is a completely different university than the University of Maryland Baltimore.  Sometimes people confuse these two universities.  To clarify, the University of Maryland Baltimore does not have a CRNA Program.

This generalization seems to apply to MD as it is ranked #16 in number of CRNA Schools in the US and #22 in number of CRNA jobs in the country.

CRNA Programs in Maryland Acceptance Rate

The average acceptance rate for CRNA schools in Maryland is 52%.  This is extremely high compared the national CRNA average acceptance rate of 26%.  The reason for this is because the two CRNA programs in MD have very extreme acceptance rates on completely opposite sides of the spectrum.  The University of Maryland CRNA program has an acceptance rate of only 10%. 250 potential students applied for 25 coveted spots in this nurse anesthetist program – one of the most selective in the country.  On the other hand, the Military CRNA has an acceptance rate of 95%.  In the previous year, the Military CRNA program had 37 applicants and 35 were accepted.  That means, if you apply for the Military CRNA program you are almost guaranteed to become a CRNA in the future.

In general, the easiest CRNA schools to get into by State are generally in the States with more CRNA schools.  For example, the average acceptance rate for CRNA schools in Florida is 30% with 9 CRNA Schools.  This compares with an acceptance rate of 13% for CRNA schools in Georgia and 24% in South Carolina, which only have 2 CRNA schools.

Nurse Anesthetist Schools in MD Conclusion

In summary, there are two CRNA schools in Maryland which are excellent choices for students interested in pursuing nurse anesthesia in the State.  Both CRNA programs are located in strategic locations and about an hour’s drive from Washington DC and Philadelphia.  Maryland is also a decent State for number of CRNA jobs.  Pursuing a CRNA program in Maryland will also make sense if you plan on staying within the State after graduation.  This is because it is common that a SRNA nurse can find nurse anesthetist jobs within the same State easier than students from out of State upon finishing school.

CRNA Schools in Virginia

Virginia, known as the Old Dominion State, is ranked #16 in total number of CRNA Schools in the United States.  It shares the #16 CRNA School ranking with Maryland, Massachusetts, South Carolina, New Jersey as well as several other States.  There are numerous established colleges and universities situated throughout Virginia State, including cities as Norfolk and Richmond, and CRNA Schools in Virginia are no exception.  CRNA students appreciate the nature throughout the State – from the majestic Appalachian Mountains all the way to the miles of coastline along the Chesapeake Bay.  These are just some of the things that make nurse anesthetist programs in Virginia unique.

Virginia has approved legislation to be part of the RN Compact States agreement and this should be implemented in 2021.  This means RN nurses are able to move around freely and work within all 33 approved multi-license states.  However, it’s important to note that there is no such APRN Compact for nurse anesthetists yet though this may change in the future.  This is something that is important when people consider CRNA Schools in VA.

Nurse Anesthetist Programs in Virginia

There are two CRNA Schools in Virginia located in the cities of Norfolk and Richmond as shown below:

  1. Old Dominion University CRNA, Norfolk (Doctor of Nursing Practice)
  2. VCU CRNA Program, Richmond (Doctor of Nursing Anesthesia Practice)

VCU CRNA Program in Virginia

All CRNA programs in VA are 3-year doctorate degrees.  Master of Nursing in Anesthesia degrees are no longer available in Virginia.  VCU offers an incredibly unique program with a didactic curriculum at distance sites across Virginia.  Students in Southwest Virginia (Abingdon), Roanoke, and Northern Virginia (Alexandria) are all able to learn together with the core Richmond class through video conferencing and web-based lessons.  By doing this, the school was able to increase the class size to 44 students with the Richmond campus being the largest.  Overall, the acceptance rate is 24% at the VCU CRNA Program.

Old Dominion University CRNA School in VA

Meanwhile, Old Dominion University CRNA is a boutique program not as well known, especially outside VA.  Although the class size last year was 15 students, the graduating class size in 2018 was only 8 students.  With that in mind, nevertheless, the Old Dominion graduate employment has consistently been 100% in the past decade and acceptance rates are at 50%.  Therefore, this may be an excellent choice of school for those who may be concerned about being accepted into a CRNA school.

This generalization applies to VA as it is ranked #16 in number of CRNA Schools in the US and #14 in number of CRNA jobs in the country.

CRNA Programs in Virginia Acceptance Rate

The average acceptance rate for CRNA schools in Virginia is 37%.  This is extremely high compared the national CRNA average acceptance rate of 26%.  The reason for this is because Old Dominion University CRNA has an extremely high acceptance rate of 50% as mentioned above.

Nurse Anesthetist Programs in VA Conclusion

In summary, Virginia is an attractive state to study nurse anesthesia.  CRNA Schools in Virginia offer the combination of flexibility in addition to an extraordinarily strong job market for nurse anesthetists upon graduation.  Pursuing a CRNA program in Virginia will also make sense if you plan on staying within the State after graduation.  This is because it is common that a SRNA nurse can find nurse anesthetist jobs within the same State easier than students from out of State upon finishing school.

CRNA Schools in New Jersey

New Jersey, known as the Garden State, is ranked #16 in total number of CRNA Schools in the United States.  It shares the #16 CRNA School ranking with Maryland, Massachusetts, South Carolina, Virginia as well as several other States.  Located in the Tri-State area, New Jersey is strategically between Pennsylvania, New York and Delaware.  CRNA students in New Jersey love how they are in close proximity to Philadelphia and NYC while having the highest population density in the US.  This allows more cultural exchange and experiences in meeting more people.

Second, New Jersey has approved legislation to be part of the RN Compact States agreement and this should be implemented in 2021.  This means RN nurses are able to move around freely and work within all 33 approved multi-license states.  However, it’s important to note that there is no such APRN Compact for nurse anesthetists yet though this may change in the future.  This is something that is important when people consider CRNA Schools in NJ.

Nurse Anesthetist Programs in New Jersey

There are two CRNA Schools in New Jersey located in the cities of Camden and Newark as shown below:

  1. Rutgers CRNA, Newark (Doctor of Nursing Practice)
  2. Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes, Camden (Master of Science in Nurse Anesthesia)

Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, is one of the largest universities in the US with more than 31,000 undergraduate students annually and it has an excellent CRNA program.  Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes CRNA Program is associated with Drexel University’s College of Nursing and the MSN is granted by Drexel.  As all CRNA school programs are transitioning from MSN to DNP degrees, as of July 2020, the Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes CRNA program is currently inactive for admission status pending further news.  Thus, in reality there is only one of two CRNA Schools in New Jersey currently active for admissions.

This generalization seems to apply to NJ as it is ranked #16 in number of CRNA Schools in the US and #18 in number of CRNA jobs in the country.

CRNA Programs in New Jersey Acceptance Rate

The average acceptance rate for CRNA schools in New Jersey is 26%.  This is exactly identical to the national CRNA average acceptance rate of 26%. In the case of New Jersey, this generalization does apply but it is difficult to generalize with only two nurse anesthetist programs in NJ.
