CRNA Salary in NYC

CRNA Salary in NYCLiving in NYC is considered a dream and great ambition for many people.  The chance to make it big in what many consider the Capital of the World cannot be more apparent than in songs like Empire State of Mind from Jay-Z and Welcome to New York by Taylor Swift.  As a previous SRNA nurse in school, I’ve always been curious about the CRNA salary in different cities around the US as there’s no real official information available.  Before graduating, I conducted my own research applying to CRNA jobs in different States I was thinking about working in.  Through this post, I’ll share my personal experiences on CRNA Salary in NYC that I found while looking and applying for a CRNA job in New York.

How CRNA Salary in NYC Works

How CRNA Salary in NYC WorksIn my opinion, real world results always beat average statistical data hands down.  What I found applying to CRNA jobs in NYC is that the starting CRNA Salary in NYC is a very standard package.  All the CRNA job offers I received from hospitals in New York City had starting salary CRNA Salary in the range of US$170,000 to US$180,000.  One hospital in Long Island, New York offered me US$185,000.  I have listed out the NYC CRNA Salary from each hospital job offer below.  For confidentiality reasons, I have kept the hospitals anonymous.

  1. CRNA Job Offer #1: US$170,000 (New York City)
  2. CRNA Offer #2: US$180,000 (New York City)
  3. Nurse Anesthetist Job Offer #3: US$185,000 (Long Island, outside NYC)
  4. CRNA Offer #4: US$190,000 (Mount Kisco, outside NYC)
  5. CRNA Job Offer #5: US$160,000 (Rochester, outside NYC)

Benefits were quite standard from all the hospitals.  They included standard malpractice, health insurance, life insurance, dental, disability, matching contribution to retirement plans.

Overall, I found the demand for CRNAs is strong in NYC.  Together with the high cost of living, the CRNA Salary in NYC has been increasing in recent years.  Older graduates say 5 years ago, the starting CRNA salary for fresh graduates’ in NYC started at US$150,000 to US$160,000.  So, the Nurse Anesthetist Salary NYC has increased about 10% over the years compared to the US$170,000 to US$180,000 job offer range that graduates receive today.

Sign-on Bonus for CRNA Salary in NYC

Sign-on Bonus for CRNA Salary in NYCMany hospitals will also offer a sign-on bonus or relocation bonus.  I’ve seen sign-on bonuses for Nurse Anesthetist Salary NYC vary from US$10,000 to US$30,000.  To begin, I feel very grateful and fortunate that new CRNA graduates are offered sign-on bonuses.  Usually this is reserved for other professions, like finance and investment banking in NYC.  The great thing about the sign-on bonus is that it can help you pay off some student debt and can also be used for the deposit on your apartment in NYC.  Unfortunately, when you receive your sign-on bonus, you will only see half of the total amount in your bank account.  Uncle Sam has already taken the other half in the form of a tax prepayment.

Specifically for NYC, the CRNA standard sign-on bonuses were US$10,000 per year.  Some NYC hospitals offered a US$10,000 sign-on bonus for one year and others offered US$20,000 for 2 years and US$30,000 for 3 years.  Although it’s great to receive more money, I generally recommend shorter commitments unless you are 100% committed to staying at the hospital for the entire length of the obligation.  If you leave the hospital prior to the agreement, the hospital will ask for the entire signing bonus to be returned.  In addition, it’s very damaging for your personal reputation and you may be blacklisted from the hospital and/or related groups (the CRNA circle is very small, especially within each State).

NYC Sign on Bonus Commitments

Indirectly, these sign-on bonuses are considered retention bonuses because they can have strings attached.  I’ve seen CRNA sign-on bonuses paid out prior to graduation in addition to ones paid out half and half.  To clarify, the hospital paid half prior to graduation and the other half after 6 months of employment.  To emphasize, sign on bonuses always have a commitment in terms of the numbers of years you need to continue working at that hospital.  Remember – There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch!

As a side note, it’s important that you speak with other CRNAs working at the hospital in or ask around about the hospital’s reputation, especially for long multiple year commitments.  The reason is because an unknown hospital may be mismanaged and offering high sign-on bonuses as the only way to attract staff.  It’s always important to do your research before you join a hospital in NYC.

Benefits for CRNA Salary in NYC

Benefits for CRNA Salary in NYCFinally, as part of your CRNA Salary in NYC, you will receive job benefits like health insurance, vacation days and a 401k contribution retirement plan.  Sometimes people ignore the benefits but receiving good health insurance from a reputable insurance provider but this is very valuable in the United States (trust me on that – coming from a healthcare professional!).  Other standard benefits from CRNA job offers in NYC include 4 weeks of paid vacation and 1 week paid conference time.  The paid conference time was a nice surprise.  The AANA has regular meetings, workshops and an annual leadership summit, and I look forward to attending to learn and expand my knowledge.  Overall, the benefits for CRNA Salary was very standard and competitive across all the hospitals in NYC.

Why CRNA Salary in NYC Matters?

It’s always fun to compare salaries with peers within the anesthesia field and friends in different industries.  But I’m sharing these numbers and acquisitions to make one point very clear – NYC is an expensive place to live!

Let’s say you are lucky and receive a CRNA job in NYC with US$170,000 salary per year.  It sounds great, but your take home pay after taxes is only about US$9,000.

Then you need to take into account spending.  Basic expenses may include:

  • Housing rent / electricity / internet / utilities ~ US$3,500 for a one bedroom apartment
  • 401K contribution ~ US$1,600 per month
  • Meals, going out occasionally, transport ~ US$1,500 per month (assuming US$50 per day, depends on the person)
  • Any student loan payments

At the end of the day, you’re left with pure cash savings of US$2,400 per month or approximately US$30,000 per year.  And this excludes any one time expenses (like an iPhone or wedding) or vacations.  So, this salary won’t make you wealthy anytime soon, but it gives you a reasonably well comfortable life.  To clarify you are guaranteed the foundation to save, invest, accumulate wealth and even move to a cheaper city in the future with your savings.  Most people would call that an excellent outcome as a career choice.

Other Factors for CRNA Salary in New York City

Other Factors for CRNA Salary in New York CityThere are various factors to consider if you’re thinking about working in NYC other than just purely the CRNA salary in New York City.  First, the work environment is different as CRNAs work under the supervision of an anesthesiologist in all hospitals in NYC.  There’s pros and cons to this.  I might talk about this in another article if there’s interest.

Second, if your main purpose is money, you would be able to save more by working in other cities.  This is because the cost of living in NYC is very expensive compared to the CRNA Salary in NYC.  You would be able to earn the same CRNA salary in other States but have nearly half the cost of accommodation and living expenses.

The #1 factor is the lifestyle of diversity, culture, and opportunity where you’ll never run out of things to do.

Conclusion

What I’ve learned is the CRNA profession is different from other occupations, so the overall yearly salary metric is difficult to generalize.  Many CRNA’s work multiple jobs, some do a lot of call shifts, while others run their own practice.  My purpose on this article on CRNA Salary in NYC is not to give one concrete final number but to give a range of figures for you to think about, to help negotiate your job offer or to help you decide on which city you want to live and work as a CRNA.
