CRNA Schools in Wisconsin

Wisconsin, known as the Badger State, is ranked #13 in total number of CRNA Schools in the United States.  It shares the #13 CRNA School ranking with New York and Puerto Rico.  Most famous for being America’s Dairyland, Wisconsin is located in the Midwest and is strong in agriculture, manufacturing and tourism.  Sometimes called Wisconsinites, students studying at CRNA Schools in Wisconsin enjoy the outdoors with Lake Michigan, hiking and camping in the rural State and appreciate the city and nightlife of urban centers like Milwaukee.

Wisconsin is included in the RN Compact States agreement that means RN nurses in Wisconsin are able to move around freely and work within all 33 approved multi-license states.  However, it’s important to note that there is no such APRN Compact for nurse anesthetists yet though this may change in the future.  This is something that is important when people consider CRNA Schools in Wisconsin.

CRNA Schools in Wisconsin

All three CRNA programs in WI offer DNP degrees.  There are no nurse anesthetist schools in Wisconsin that offer MSN master’s degrees.  The Mayo Clinic Health System School of Anesthesia is a partnership with the Franciscan Healthcare campus in La Crosse, Wisconsin.  It is a boutique program that promotes Christian concepts that emphasize the dignity of all human persons, their origin, purpose and destiny.  Marquette is also a boutique program in Milwaukee that has become more competitive in recent year with the number of applicants gone up 28% in the past year.   Lastly, UW Oshkosh was the first school to offer a doctoral level nurse anesthetist program in Wisconsin in 2017.  The program has been a success and is well regarded by nurse anesthetists in Wisconsin.

As of Year End 2020, there are 122 CRNA schools in the United States and 2.4 CRNA schools in each State on average.  To compare, there are 13 CRNA schools in Pennsylvania and 9 CRNA schools in Florida.  In addition, North Carolina and Tennessee both have 6 CRNA schools.  On the other hand, there are no CRNA programs at all in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, New Mexico, Vermont, New Hampshire, Alaska, and Hawaii.  Oftentimes, the States with more CRNA schools tend to have more CRNA jobs as well.

This generalization applies to CRNA Schools in Wisconsin as the State ranks #17 in the greatest number of CRNA jobs in the US, which is like its CRNA school ranking.  This is one rank above New Jersey, which is ranked #18.  However, what stands out the most about Wisconsin is the CRNA salary.  The average CRNA salary in Wisconsin is US$233,600, which ranks #4 in the entire United States.

CRNA Programs in Wisconsin Acceptance Rate

The average acceptance rate for CRNA schools in Wisconsin is 17%.  Overall, the 17% acceptance rate is significantly lower than the national CRNA average acceptance rate of 26%.  Mayo Clinic Health System reported an acceptance rate of 25% with a class size of 10 while Marquette CRNA reported an acceptance rate of only 7% with a class size of 10.  Finally, University of Wisconsin Oshkosh CRNA had an acceptance rate of 20% with a class size of 15.  In general, the easiest CRNA schools to get into by State are generally in the States with more CRNA schools.  For example, the average acceptance rate for CRNA schools in Florida is 30% with 9 CRNA Schools.

However, that does not apply to nurse anesthetist schools in Wisconsin.  It seems the low acceptance rates in Wisconsin are a factor of exceedingly small CRNA class sizes in the programs in the State.  This is because the average class size in CRNA schools is 24 students per year.
